A British general who served in the American Revolution. He led the British to many battle victories against the colonies. he was the commander-in-chief of the British forces in the war. In the Battle of Long Island, he defeated Washington and his troops, but was not a very smart general, so he did not let his men finish the colinies once and for all, but made them retreat, which was considered the greatest missed oppurtunity of the war. He could have won the American revolution right there, but he did not.

I agreed with the British that it was fair to get money fromj the colonists in return for all the protection from the british they got. And, they only had to pay 1/26 of what the british had to pay themselves. it seems pretty unfair and greedy of the colonists to notwant to pay anything at all, since the British are helping them. I don't think that the british parliament should have caved in so quickly though when it came to the stamp taxes. They are the ones who have power over the colonies so they should be telling the colonists what to do, not the other way around.
Response to Reading-
The article made the british seem less evil and power thirsty, and actually put the badness onto America. In the story, it says that the British were only trying to help the colonies out while barely making enough money for themselves, but America refused. It seems that the British were being fair, they only taxed the colonies to pay for them. The colonists seem really selfish, when they pressured parliament into giving up the Stamp tax. Parliament didn't actually seem to have done anything wrong. The article said that the British Parliament relied only on the loyalty and affection of their citizens, and never used unnecessary force on them. There seems to be no "good" or "bad" side to the war.

As of tomorrow the government will be increasing taxes on all items containing sugar in public school cafeterias in Massachusetts. This will include all candy, ice cream, and soda. The tax is expected to cause the cost of all candy, ice cream and soda to rise by 10 cents. The tax raised will be used to subsidize a healthy eating initiative by the government. Questions 1. How will this impact your life? 2. How would you react to this? 3. Which group of people would this tax hurt the most? 4. How could you avoid paying the tax? 5. What actions could you take to change the situation?
This makes buying things more expensive, espicially th e food from vending machines and such. I think that the people who eat junk everyday will be hurt the most, because they are the ones buying them. It wouldn't really affect me that much, because I don't buy that stuff. Also, Malden High doesn't sell soda or candy. You could avoid the tax if you stopped buying all the sugar filled food. I don't really care about taxing the candy, ice cream and soda because I think it is for a good cause. But don't a lot of the other foods served for lunch contain sugar too? Its not just the junk food. Isn't there sugar in milk and juice and fruits and all that other stuff?
I feel that Britain had a right to enforce the sugar tax. They are saying that they just want to help pay for the protection and stuff for America buy taxing one hundred pounds of sugar. It seems that one shilling or one pound is a fair enough deal for one hundred poumds of sugar. I don't think that one person will go through 100 pounds of sugar in their life time. Britain says that it is necessary to enforce the tax to defend and protect the colonies, without the money, it is America who will suffer. Britain is just looking out for them.

I think that it is important to know other peoples perspectives on things, because everyone has a different point of view. Maybe you don't realize something, and other people do and they can help you understand things better. Without different perspectives, you can't get the whole big picture. You only have a small part. If we only hear one side of a story, we will automatically believe it because there is nothing to challenge its truthness. But we need all the sides of whatever story it is, like in a war or something. Perspective is important to fully understand what actually happened and why.

The debate did not change my mind on whether or not the British were justified in taxing the colonists. Even though the Americans won, I still think that Britain had the right and the colonies shoudn't have protested.
I thinkk that the Stamp Act is a direct tax because the money collected from the tax goes directly to the government. YOu have to pay the money and the tax in order to recieve your stamp or whatever it is that you want.
it seems that the colonists did not approve of the stamp act anbd felt that they should not be taxed for anything by anyone other thatn their own government and not the British government. I think that they are very angry with this.
Podcast-I think that my predictions were right. In the podcast, it tells that the colonists hated the Stamp Act and many people, slaves, women, and workers all gathered together to state their agaion agaisnst the British. They especially hated the British official charged with enforcing the Stamp Act.
Summary-Basiclly, the colonists were angry because of the new Stamp Act that had been enforced, and protested against it in ways like hanging effigies and having riots. Unfortunately, the riots got a little out of hand when a mob destroyed Hutchinson's (a politician) home.
The first picture mostly shows the British as being the bad guys and the colonistsas just innocent bystanders. The second picture shows the colonists acting rowdy and violent, so maybe Britain had a right to shoot at them. This is probably because the first picture was made by a colonist, and the second picture was made by a British person, and they have two different views on the Boston Massacre.
I think they found the soldiers guilty because they were British and they were in Boston.
Homework-
I agree with the jury and that the British should be innocent. From all the evidence, it seems that it was the colonists fault for the shootings and murders. Yes, violence can be justified if there is a good reason for it. For instance, if someone was trying to kill you, and you stabbed them or killed them in self defense, that would be okay because your life is at stake, so that violence would be justified. Violence would not be justified if you just started fighting for no reason and somethikng stupid was the cause.
